Millwall and Charlton to host Girls' soccer centres.
The
London FA have recently launched two new soccer centres in south east London for girls aged 8-12 years.
The idea behind the centres is to offer girls the opportunity to take part in organised football sessions outside of school hours in a safe and friendly environment. One of the aims of the sessions is to get more girls playing football in the local area and we hope that by being linked in with the Girls' Centre of Excellence programmes at Millwall and Charlton Athletic will help to attract more girls. The London FA is hoping to be able to form small teams from these sessions and eventually enter them into a local league.
Funding has been provided by the London Playing Fields Foundation, who have a very keen involvement in the development of female football in London.
Millwall Girls’ Centre of Excellence Director, Paul Palmer, said: “This is fantastic opportunity for young girls who are not involved in teams to come along and receive good quality coaching and an option to be signposted to a local team.
"The relationship that both Millwall and Charlton have with the local Selkent league is fantastic for the local community of south east London. We hope to encourage more young female players to engage in competitive and structured football as this will help and support Centre of Excellence programmes like ours long term”.
The two sessions will take place on Saturdays, starting on the 31 October. One centre is running at London Marathon Sports Ground on Shooters Hill Road, Greenwich from 10am-noon, and will be run by Charlton. The second centre will take place at Millwall Community Scheme, The Lions Centre, Bolina Road from noon-1.30pm and will be run by a Millwall & London FA Community Sports Coach. There will also be the opportunity to attend the senior women’s team matches and meet the female players of both teams.
