The FA
'A fantastic opportunity'
By FA Editorial - Tuesday, 25 November, 2008
Following his appointment last week as Chief Executive of The FA's Bid Company, England 2018 Ltd, Andy Anson spoke of his excitement at taking the role and is looking forward to the 'fantastic opportunity' ahead.Anson, who is currently Chief Executive - Europe for the ATP, the men’s professional tennis tour, begins his new role in January 2009 and spoke to the press on Tuesday.
He believes there is great optimism about bringing the World Cup Finals back to England for the first time since 1966, but says that those involved in the project will have to work together with concerned parties across the country if the bid is to be successful.
“We’ll operate from a strong starting point and we’ll be focusing on promoting the best that England has to offer," said the 44-year-old who was previously Commercial Director at Manchester United.
"Everyone I’ve spoken to is enthusiastic about the prospect of the World Cup coming to England and there is definitely a momentum building across the country.
"One important element will be how we work with all the stakeholders such as the clubs, national and regional government, supporter groups and local communities to put a winning bid together."
Anson insists that, just by bidding, England must not expect to be rewarded with the World Cup. However, he is confident of seeing the competition come to these shores as the bid team aims to promote everything this country has to offer.
"We mustn’t fall into the trap of thinking it is our turn," he added. "Nor must we start competing directly with a strong list of other countries who will be bidding as well.
"What we will do, is concentrate on what England can deliver for the country and for the whole world.
"This was a fantastic opportunity I couldn’t pass up but I’m really excited about the prospect of working towards bringing the tournament back to England.”
