Jermain Defoe scored a hat-trick to earn Tottenham an FA Cup Fifth Round tie at Bolton Wanderers and end the impressive run of League One Leeds.

And Defoe, who missed a penalty as Tottenham twice threw away the lead when the teams drew at White Hart Lane in their first meeting, clearly deserved to be on the winning side. Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp said: “Defoe is capable of scoring all the time. He has been doing that since I first signed him aged 15.”

Leeds had the better of Manchester United when they won at Old Trafford in the last round, but they found it difficult to bridge the gap again and struggled to cope with the pace of Premier League opposition over 90 minutes.

But it was never easy for the London side despite being good value for a one-goal lead when Defoe put them in front in the 37th minute.

A packed Elland Road really came to life when Luciano Becchio equalised in time added on at the end of the first half. Tottenham recovered to regain their grip on the game after the break and Defoe struck again in the 73rd minute.

Leeds threatened another dramatic finish and had some chances, but there was no answer to Defoe’s third strike when he ran clear on his own and scored again three minutes into injury time.

Leeds manager Simon Grayson remained upbeat afterwards and said: “We have to take a lot of positives from our Cup run and now get back on track and with our main aim of promotion up to the Championship."
