Matchday experience: half-time
- The Boot Room
- 20 September 2019
In the fourth part of a series focusing on the matchday experience for Foundation Phase players, we look at how the half-time should be approached.
At half-time, the temptation is to go into ‘professional coach mode’ and dissect every kick and every piece of the action. It’s important that you don’t do this.
Instead, really think about what you will say and try to give specific feedback rather than generalisations.
Set out exactly what you want the team to think about in the second half but avoid overloading them with information.
If you have tasked the resting players with observing during the first half, then you can even use their insights as it might give you some interesting things to start with.
Watch the video below to see how the first coach handles his half-time team talk.
If you’ve been focusing on something specific in training, another approach you could take is challenging your team to see if they can do it in the match.
This is the acid test and obviously makes a very strong link between training and getting better where it matters, in the match.
The second coach has been working with the Foundation Phase DNA and wants his players to think about two things only. See if you can hear what they are in the video below.
Keep an eye out on The Boot Room and @StGeorgesPark for the next part of the series.
