Jay Emmanuel-Thomas celebrates Bristol City's opening goal against Tamworth

Bristol City held off a late fightback from Tamworth to earn a 2-1 win at the Lamb Ground and move into The FA Cup with Budweiser Third Round.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas put the League One side ahead nine minutes before half-time when he smashed a left-footed shot into the top left-hand corner of the goal.

Dale Belford's Lambs, 20th in the Conference Premier, put in a brave and committed display, and their best chance to equalise came when striker Justin Richards early in the second half.

He latched onto a long ball but failed to find the target from close range with only Elliot Parish to beat.

Sam Baldock then doubled the lead and looked to have secured victory for the Robins when he fired high into the net seven minutes from the end.

However, Andy Todd gave the Lambs hope late on when he scored from close range. His effort, following a scramble in the six-yard box, was given despite not clearly crossing the line completely, but it was not enough to earn a replay.

Instead, Steve Coterill's side tasted victory in his first game in charge, and he then saw them handed a home tie against Watford in the next round.
