Roberto Di Matteo believes St. George's Park provides England with the perfect base to build their footballing philosophy.

Di Matteo, who guided Chelsea to Champions League and FA Cup success in 2012, was speaking at The FA Licensed Coaches' Club Conference on Saturday and said his first visit to the national football centre had made an impression.

"It's a very impressive state-of-the-art building and facilities here, and it is great for me to experience St. George's Park for the first time," said the 43-year-old.

"A footballing country like England needed a national centre where the focus is on developing the players and also providing the facilities for them to train and become better players.

"There are a lot of learning courses for coaches here so it just brings everyone together.

"I think the framework is now together for England to develop their own football philosophy.

"You have to have your own idea and respect the culture that the country has, so it will be interesting to see what new strategy is going to develop and what players can benefit."

Di Matteo looked to be enjoying himself on the day too, chatting with a number of fellow coaches at the Conference, an event which he believes can only benefit those in attendance.

The former Lazio and Chelsea midfielder added: "It's always good to meet new people and exchange ideas, opinions and experiences.

“It's always a fascinating encounter when Italy face England.”

"It's really interesting to listen to some of the speakers here today and I do believe in professional development and education."

And after last week's World Cup draw, the former Italian international was asked on how he saw the Three Lions' chances against the Azzurri after the two nations were drawn in the same group.

"It's always a fascinating encounter when Italy face England," commented the former MK Dons and West Bromwich Albion boss.

"In the group, there's going to be one of those two and Uruguay that don't qualify for the next stage so it is going to be a tough one to say which ones will make it."
