Wayne Rooney backed to break Man Utd goal records

Wayne Rooney celebrates his goal for Manchester United against Tottenham Hotspur.

Wayne Rooney has been backed to break Manchester United's all-time goalscoring record by Reds boss David Moyes – if he keeps up his current run of form.

The England striker currently has 207 goals for United and is the club's fourth highest goalscorer, but is now just four goals away from overtaking Jack Rowley into third place.

And then he will have the legendary Old Trafford names of Denis Law with 237 and Sir Bobby Charlton with 249 goals in his sights.

Moyes revealed: "There are some big targets ahead for Wayne.

"Can he break Bobby Charlton's goalscoring record?

"There are some fantastic legends around this club and Wayne has got a chance to be one of them.

2. Denis Law - 237
3. Jack Rowley - 210
4. Wayne Rooney - 207

"He already is with what he does, but I am talking real top status.

"Those targets are not too far away if he keeps playing the way he is now - if he does I am sure he will get there because he is that good."

Rooney is set to make the 500th club appearance of his career on Sunday when United travel to face Aston Villa in the Premier League.

And Moyes believes that Rooney’s infectious attitude towards the game means he expects him to be on the scene for a few more years yet, possibly in a deeper position to where we've grown used to seeing him.

"Wayne is a boy who will play for a long time," added Moyes.

"He can go far in terms of numbers because as he gets older he is adaptable and such a good football player.

"Maybe if he gets older and loses a bit of his pace, he can always drop a bit deeper and play deeper.”
