Alex Horne has paid tribute to both England Women’s star Rachel Yankey and former FA Chairman David Bernstein following their inclusion on the New Year Honours List.

Yankey, who became England’s most capped player earlier this year, was given an OBE for services to the women’s game.

The Arsenal midfielder, 34, has 129 England appearances to her name and 19 goals and has featured in two World Cups, three Euro Finals and was also part of Team GB for the London 2012 Olympics.

FA General Secretary Horne has worked with both Yankey and Bernstein in recent years and was delighted to see both of their names on the list.

He said: "On behalf of everyone at The FA, I would like to offer congratulations to David Bernstein and Rachel Yankey after being named in the New Year Honours List.

"As England's most capped footballer of all time, it is important that Rachel's outstanding achievement have been recognised in this way.

"Rachel has played a crucial role in the development of the women's game in England, on the field as a star player and off the pitch as a fantastic ambassador.”

Bernstein, whose term as FA Chairman came to an end in 2013, was awarded a CBE for his services to football following prior spells as chairman of Manchester City and Wembley Stadium.

He helped to oversee the first half of The FA's 150 anniversary year in 2013 and also appointed Roy Hodgson as England Manager in 2012.

"David Bernstein has made a significant contribution to football over many years, notably as Chairman of Manchester City FC, Wembley Stadium and most recently The FA,” added Horne.

"While Chairman of The FA he worked extremely hard across all levels of the game in England, always with the highest integrity.

"His commitment to improving The FA's relationships with FIFA, UEFA and other National Associations was important in Wembley being awarded The UEFA Champions League Final - during The FA's 150th anniversary year."
