Adam Lallana is proud to see the hard work that has been put in at Southampton being reflected in Roy Hodgson’s latest England squad.
The Saints skipper scored a stunning goal in his side’s 4-1 win over Hull City on Saturday, after being named in Hodgson’s squad to face Chile and Germany along with club-mates Jay Rodriguez and Rickie Lambert.
And with two more players from St.Mary’s in the Under-21s squad in the shape of James Ward-Prowse and Luke Shaw, the south coast club will be well represented at St. George’s Park when the players meet up this week.
“It has been a proud week for the club, with J-Rod and Rickie also being named in the squad,” admitted the 25-year-old.
“It just proves how far the club has come forward and it is credit to not just the players, but the management staff, chairman, the scouting and recruitment department and the fans, who have stuck with us when we were in League One not so long ago.”
Lallana’s performance and goal on Saturday was witnessed by Hodgson himself, ahead of the squad get-together on Tuesday.
And with Chile providing the opposition on Friday evening, Lallana is hoping he’s done enough to impress the Three Lions boss and pick up a first senior cap at Wembley.
“Someone did mention [Roy was in the crowd] but it is one of those things you have to try and put to the back of your mind and concentrate on your job," added Lallana, who was an unused England substitute against Ukraine last year.
“Every time I play I just want to go onto the pitch and enjoy my football and play to the best of my ability, help the team get three points.
“I feel like I am playing with freedom and confidence at the minute, as the team is, and that is one of the main reasons why we are getting these good results.
“I just want to keep my feet on the ground and keep working hard.
"I want to enjoy my time away with England and hopefully, if I get some minutes, try to impress."
