Cahill keen to put things right against Germany

Gary Cahill couldn't hide his disappointment on Friday after tasting a rare Wembley setback, as Chile inflicted a 2-0 defeat on the Three Lions.

The Chelsea defender admits it's a bad feeling to suffer this setback so soon after the elation of World Cup qualification last month, as England never really did themselves justice against the impressive South Americans.

But Cahill believes this was simply an off-colour performance and will ultimately be a worthwhile learning experience in preparation for potential World Cup opponents such as Chile.

He told TheFA.com: "I didn't think we were at our sharpest today and they played really well - a great side.

"We just had an off day, which happens sometimes.

"In the last three or four games, we've really been at it when the pressure's been on but today, we weren't as sharp as we've been in previous games and teams like this punish you."

England now face a four day wait until they have a chance to put things right, when Germany are the visitors to Wembley on Tuesday evening.

And Cahill believes that game and result now takes on more importance for the squad, who want to end this get-together on a high with a good result.

"We just can't wait for the next game to come around after that, because it's not a nice feeling," he added.

"People will read and write what they want to, but I wouldn't get too carried away with that because if we were on it like we had been in the last few games, it would've been a different outcome.

"The lads can't wait for Tuesday to try and put this right now.

"It doesn't matter if it's a friendly game or a qualifier, when you play for your country you want to go and win no matter what."
