Sunderland boss Mick Mulhern believes few teams will leave Aston Villa with the kind of result they achieved to keep their perfect start to The FA Women’s Super League Two intact.
Beth Mead netted twice in the first half, as well as hitting the post, while Abbey Joice added a third in their 3-0 defeat of Villa.
Sunderland have now dispatched Durham, Reading and Villa in the first season of The FA WSL 2 and Mulhern admits other teams will be hard pushed to follow their lead.
“Three out of three – we can’t complain – but there’s no easy game at this level. This is a great result for us to come to the Villa and win 3-0 because teams don’t do that,” he said.
“It’s always a difficult place to come, they are always well organised and get behind the ball very well, but we had a game plan and to be fair it worked.
“It was never going to be easy we were up against it with their set pieces and corners but our girls were very resilient, we showed a lot of character and we picked off Villa bit by bit.”
Sunderland’s win was one of four FA WSL 2 fixtures on Sunday with Watford earning their first victory of the campaign beating Durham 2-1.
Yeovil earned their second successive win 1-0 at Oxford while Millwall Lionesses remain unbeaten after a 2-2 draw in a derby-day clash with London Bees.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, Doncaster Rovers Belles kept their 100 per cent start going with a 5-2 win over Reading.
Jess Sigsworth scored twice and Millie Bright netted a stunner from 35 yards as the Belles made it three wins from their opening three games to leave manager Gordon Staniforth purring. “I thought we were fantastic. That was a complete performance.
“To be honest we just blitzed them. The finishing, the goals and the chances that we created, we could have been out of sight by half-time.
“Millie’s been waiting for that goal for a few weeks. We’ve been practicing and practicing and that’s the Millie Bright that I know is capable of playing for England.
“At half-time we said to make sure we didn’t concede, but we will always create chances. We’re very good at that quick counter attack.”
