With the game in extra-time both sides pushed on for a winning and decisive goal, however despite Christian Gregory putting Deal ahead, Ricky Freeman equalised for the Phoenix.
It meant that the tie had to be settled by penalties and, after several spot-kicks, Deal finally claimed a place in the next round with an 8-7 victory.
The late goals were also flying in elsewhere, as Tipton Town scored a 78th minute winner to topple St. Andrews.
Tipton and St. Andrews had been set for extra-time too, but Josh March’s late strike ensured that the hosts progressed past the Extra Preliminary Round thanks to a 2-1 victory.
Tipton’s home win was a rarity on the night, with West Allotment Celtic’s 2-0 victory over Hebburn Town the only other.
In contrast there were six away wins, as Alresford Town, Boston Town and Retford United all claimed 3-1 victories over Christchurch, Walsham Le Willows and Stapenhill respectively.
Welwyn Garden City defeated Hadley 2-1 away from home in their replay and Newmarket Town overcame Fakenham Town 1-0.
