Butland might have endured a nomadic year on a domestic level, with loan spells at Leeds United and Derby County, but he has been a real rock for the Under-21s.

A big character in the squad, the Bristol-born ace also brings a calmness on the pitch as one of the Under-21s’ most experienced players.

And while the goalscorers often take the plaudits, some of Butland’s saves in his six games during 2014 have been match-winning.

His stunning save in the early stages of the play-off second leg against Croatia in October was as important as a goal, given how tightly balanced the tie was. It provided England with the platform to complete a 2-1 away victory.

Butland has previously been capped by England at U16, U17, U20 and senior level and has 24 appearances for the Under-21s to his name, plus three more at this year's Toulon Tournament.

After a memorable 2014, Butland will now be hoping to take that momentum into 2015.
