The FA’s head of talent identification Mike Rigg believes there needs to be culture change within England’s talent identification system if more stars of the future are to be unearthed.
Speaking at The FA’s first-ever talent identification conference at St George’s Park, Rigg explained the "snapshot mentality" which historically has guided the way players are selected, needs to be replaced with a more rounded, scientific approach that considers the whole player as well as their future potential.
"In the future, our talent ID process must move beyond the snapshot mentality," explained Rigg.
"We have to observe and understand the player over a period of time and fully consider and understand all the issues associated with the player’s age and stage of development such as growth and maturity.
"It is about trying to understand all of the factors that affect a player during their development. We have to try and keep them in the system longer and try to avoid making snap decisions.
"It is crucial to stay focused on potential and the possible strengths that may flourish over time rather than simply how they are performing right now today."
Over 300 talent identification professionals and enthusiasts gathered at the national football centre for a variety of presentations and workshops, including a question and answer session with former Chelsea and Tottenham director of football Frank Arnesen.
The event is the start point of a new structure of talent identification courses and CPD events and Rigg believes it highlights the appetite amongst those in the industry to improve the way in which talent is unearthed.
"I take great pride that we can host the first ever talent ID event of its kind at St. George’s Park," he added.
"The programme has been designed to reflect the huge range of skills now required in our industry and our guest presenters all come with a huge wealth of experience to reflect this.
"The numbers attending the event reflect the enthusiasm, dedication and professionalism of those that aim to seek out the wealth of talent that exists in our game today."
