The Tykes, then in The Championship, embarked on a magical journey all the way to The Semi-Finals before tasting defeat against Cardiff City, and the exploits of that side are still being talked about in Yorkshire.
Stephen Foster was centre-half during The Tykes side that campaign, and he scored two goals on route – the first in an away tie at Blackpool before a second arriving in the more glamorous surroundings of Anfield.

“I got a nice goal, which was enjoyable,” Foster told FATV as he recalled his first at Bloomfield Road. “It was a backheel – we kind of scraped through if I’m honest.”
Following that defeat of the Tangerines, Barnsley overcame an away tie at Southend United to secure a plump tie to Premier League high-flyers Liverpool.
“You couldn’t really complain when you draw Liverpool at Anfield. I was buzzing with that one,” he said.
Having trailed to a Dirk Kuyt strike, Foster notched an equaliser before Barnsley sent Liverpool crashing out thanks to Brian Howard's dramatic injury-time winner.
“I’ve seen the goal a few times on replays and it’s one of the highlights of my career to score at the Kop end,” said Foster.
“My dad died the year before I came to Barnsley, and all the emotion seemed to pour out when I scored that equaliser.
“He was born in Liverpool, even though he was a United fan, it was nice to dedicate a goal to him.”
Next up for Foster and his team-mates was a visit of Chelsea to Oakwell – and they provided yet more cup magic as they beat the holders 1-0 to reach The Semi-Finals, Kayode Odejayi was the hero as his second-half header proved to be enough.
Foster recalled: “If anything, I thought we were the better team. With all the fans coming on [at full-time] it was impossible to get back to the changing-room.”
Their run went on to Wembley as a 1-0 defeat to Cardiff City brought the dream to an end – but the memories will last a lifetime.
“It was something I’d never experience before.
“Scoring in the couple of games, like at Anfield, it doesn’t get much better than that.”
The Barnsley faithful will be hoping they can take another step towards repeating their 2008 heroics when they welcome Conference National side Chester to Oakwell on Sunday.
