Only skipper and former Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney has bagged more than him in 2014. And, although his first goal this year did not arrive until September, his strikes have been of huge value to Roy Hodgson's team.
His opened his account with a a match-winning double away in Switzerland, ensuring England returned from what was expected to be their toughest away trip in Group E with three points.
Welbeck weighed in with one in the routine 5-0 victory over San Marino in October, but another double in November clinched three more points to send England into the New Year with a comfortable lead at the top of the group.
England went behind against Slovenia at Wembley, a 58th-minute Jordan Henderson own-goal put them on the back foot after controlling much of the game.
Rooney levelled almost instantly with a penalty, then Welbeck stepped forward to win the game.
First, Adam Lallana’s low cross was saved by the feet of keeper Samir Handanovic and the ball fell kindly to Welbeck who directed back into the net.
Then, after a quick one-two with Raheem Sterling, he slotted past the Inter Milan stopper for his fifth goal in four games.
It means that he sits at the top of the scoring charts in France 2016 qualifying with five goals, alongside Israel's Omer Damari.
