Sheffield Ladies FC did their goal difference a world of good and extended their lead at the top of the Northern Division, thanks to an 11-2 win over Huddersfield Town.
Sixth-place Huddersfield kept the steel city club at bay for half an hour before the floodgates opened, and the score at the break was a remarkable 8-1.
Jodie Michalska grabbed five for Sheffield, taking her season’s tally to 19, and ensuring her team lead Coventry on goal difference by a margin of 12.
Coventry also prevailed, but in stark contrast with Sheffield, were unable to build on a flying start against Newcastle United.
Within two minutes the Sky Blues stormed ahead but Newcastle held firm until player of the match Amber Hughes made it 2-0 with shortly before half-time.
West Midlands side Sporting Club Albion stayed seventh after a 3-2 win at eighth-placed Derby County.
The Southern Division was hit hard by postponements also, with the top-of-the-table clash between Brighton & Hove Albion and Cardiff City one of the victims.
This gave Charlton Athletic, who sat in third place and with a superior goal difference to the two clubs above, the chance to climb to top spot if they could overcome Gillingham – and they produced a clinical performance in Kent to do just that.
The Addicks ran riot to record a 4-0 win, with player of the match Kit Graham helping herself to a hat-trick – taking her total to 51 goals in 86 games.
Fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur travelled to mid-table Queens Park Rangers and were 3-1 victors thanks to a brace from Avilla Bergin and a Katie O’Leary strike, with Lauren Gage pulling one back for the hosts.
Two of the division’s teams were involved in the County Cup. Portsmouth Ladies were convincing winners away to Boscombe, hitting 13 without reply.
Unlike Pompey, Plymouth Argyle were left ruing their missed opportunities as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Alphington – with the Pilgrims registering 40 attempts at goal without finding a breakthrough.
