Kieran Gibbs made a return to the England squad this year, and doubled his caps tally to take him to six at senior level.
Injury has played a part, but the form and consistency of Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines meant that prior to 2014, the 25-year-old had played only once for England since his first two outings in 2010.
He came into the squad again this autumn and was handed a start in the 5-0 win over San Marino, before stepping in for the injured Baines in the final Qualifier of the year against Slovenia. He played a part in the third goal, linking up with Welbeck and Sterling as his Arsenal team-mate clinched victory.
Luke Shaw, another of the contenders for the no.3 shirt, came in to start against Scotland in Glasgow, but Gibbs replaced him midway through the second half as England claimed a second successive 3-1 victory.
