And a fine last-ditch tackle from Dier in stoppage time of that game helped the Three Lions keep hold of their slender lead before the second leg in Vinkovci.
The Sporting Lisbon academy graduate then came into the starting line-up for that game and played his part as another fine team performance resulted in a 2-1 away victory and a spot in next summer’s Euro Finals.
It was also a big year for the 20-year-old in terms of his club football, as he traded in life in Lisbon for White Hart Lane during the summer.
