Ten of the 25 Division One fixtures fell victim to the weather in a decimated final weekend of 2014 FA WPL action, writes Chris Frith.
Current leaders of the Northern section Liverpool Marshall Feds were one of those affected by the frosty conditions, and this allowed second-place Guiseley AFC Vixens the opportunity to close the gap to just four points as they recorded a 5-0 win over Tranmere Rovers.
Mossley Hill’s winless run continued as they went down 5-2 at Leeds but Middlesbrough tasted success on the road as they were 3-0 victors at Morecambe – their first league win since September.
Down in the Midlands, Loughborough Foxes extended their lead at the top by beating third-placed Leafield Athletic in an exciting spectacle which ended 5-3.
They received another boost to their title bid as second-placed Leicester City WFC were held to a goalless draw at home to neighbours Leicester City LFC.
In the County Cup, FC Reedswood’s triumphed in the County Cup as they ran out 4-0 winners against Walsall Ladies at Long Lane Park.
Only one game went ahead in the South East Division and it saw just one strike as Cambridge created some room between themselves and fifth-placed Luton Town with a victory over struggling Bedford.
Fans of FA WPL South West Division One were more fortunate as four games survived – and it was business as usual for Swindon Town. Unbeaten in all-competitions since mid-October, they continued their impressive form with a rampant 5-0 rout of Shanklin to maintain their three-point lead at the top of the table.
Forest Green Rovers are hot on their tail at the top, however, as they picked up the points with a 4-0 defeat of Southampton Saints.
In-form Exeter City also recorded a 4-0 victory at Cheltenham Town as they kept up the pressure on Forest Green, trailing by three points and having played a game less.
Larkhall Athletic reduced the gap on fifth-placed Chichester City with a comfortable 3-0 win over the West Sussex side – which means should they win their game in hand they will leapfrog City.
