On Wednesday the British Army football team will entertain the German Bundeswehr at Aldershot's ESS Stadium.
The game forms part of the Football Remembers commemorative activities that have been taking place throughout 2014 in honour of the 1914 Christmas Truce.
The stories of impromptu games played during an unofficial ceasefire on no-man's land between troops from both sides of the trenches are one of the most heart-warming examples of humanity prevailing in the most harrowing of circumstances, as the soldiers briefly turned the killing fields into football fields.

And Football Remembers – a joint initiative between the FA, Premier League, Football League and British Council – celebrates the spirit of the 1914 Christmas Truce 100 years on.
Throughout 2014 a number of other commemorative activities have taken place, including every team in the country – from the grassroots game to the Premier League – joining together for a combined pre-match photograph, thus replicating the spirit of the 1914 Truce.
All the images were then uploaded to a special www.FootballRemembers.com website.
As 2014 and the Football Remembers commemoration period draws to a close, the British Army’s Football Team will again take on their German counterparts in a commemorative ‘Game of Truce’ match in the barracks town of Aldershot.
The match will symbolise the unity between the two nations, and football's unifying powers.
High profile guests will include FA Chairman Greg Dyke, Head of the Army General Sir Nicholas Carter and Sir Bobby Charlton.
Tickets for the game are priced at £3.00 for adults and £1.00 for U18s and Concessions which are available through Aldershot Town Football Club.
All proceeds from the match will be donated to the Royal British Legion and the German Military’s equivalent charity.
Pay turnstiles will also be open on the evening.
