It was the end of an era in July as Steven Gerrard announced his international retirement after 114 appearances for England.
Named as Roy Hodgson’s permanent skipper in 2012, the Liverpool midfielder will be remembered as one of the Three Lions greatest ever players – and one of only nine centurions.
Prior to hanging up his boots for his country during the summer aged 34, he played in six of the seven England games during the first half of the year.
Having bagged 21 international goals prior to 2014, he was unable to add to his tally this year – his last England strike being the goal against Poland last October that secured his team’s place at the World Cup.
The Finals, though, will go down as a disappointment for Gerrard as England crashed out after two games.
And soon after he made his emotional announcement.
"It was a very difficult decision to make, it is something that I have been contemplating for a long time, and not just since the end of the World Cup,” Gerrard told TheFA.com when he confirmed his retirement.

"I haven't made my decision on the back of the World Cup. I've made my decision in my age, on my body.”
