Gerrard celebrates his winner

Steven Gerrard clinched a vital victory for Liverpool in the very last minute against Fulham as his penalty gave the Reds a 3-2 win.

The Three Lions and Liverpool captain was quickly brought back down to earth with a bump at Craven Cottage following Saturday's 5-1 victory over Arsenal.

His side, who also included Raheem Sterling, Jordan Henderson, Daniel Sturridge and Jon Flanagan in their line-up, fell behind inside eight minutes. The Cottagers' Kieran Richardson, who has eight caps, saw his cross from the left sliced into the net by Kolo Toure to open the scoring.

Richardson was looking dangerous throughout an impressive first-half for the hosts, linking up well with fellow international Darren Bent, but they were to be punished for failing to grab a second.

With just four minutes of the half remaining, Gerrard popped up out of nowhere to bend a delightful ball into the path of Sturridge, and the lethal striker made no mistake as he fired an equaliser in off the post for his nineteenth of the season.

The second-half started with the visitors in control, and they almost took the lead through Luis Suarez, but against the run of play they found themselves trailing again on 63 minutes.

A cross from the right caused confusion in the Liverpool penalty area as Martin Skrtel's poor clearance fell to Richardson, and he made no mistake as he drilled it from close-range into the net.

The former Manchester United and Sunderland player received a standing ovation for his efforts when he was substituted with twenty minutes to go. But within a minute of him leaving, cheers turned to tears for Fulham as they were pegged back by a tremendous goal courtesy of Philippe Coutinho.

This was followed by an injury to goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg moments later, meaning David Stockdale entered the fray to replace him - but he was powerless to prevent his side slipping to defeat.

As the clock struck 90 minutes, Sturridge drove into the area before he was sent sprawling by Sascha Riether's trip - and Gerrard showed nerves of steel yet again to fire home the spot-kick.

Elsewhere in London, Kieran Gibbs and Jack Wilshere both started for Arsenal as they lined-up against fellow Three Lions Chris Smalling, Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley and Wayne Rooney at the Emirates.

The Gunners missed out on an opportunity to regain top spot in the Premier League as they played out a stalemate with Manchester United - despite the introductions of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ashley Young for the hosts and visitors respectively.

Steven Taylor and Under-21s winger Sammy Ameobi started for Newcastle United on a night to forget for the Geordies.

The pair were helpless to stop Tottenham Hotspur running riot up in the north east as they suffered a 4-0 drubbing at St. James' Park.

Kyle Walker and Aaron Lennon both lined-up for Spurs and Andros Townsend came on as a second-half substitute.

Peter Crouch, who has scored 22 times in 42 appearances for his country, continued his recent good form in front of goal by opening the scoring for Stoke City against Swansea City.

Ryan Shawcross captained the Potters but he could not stop Chico Flores from equalising for the Swans.
