Pellegrini refuses to be drawn on talk of a quadruple

Manuel Pellegrini said it would be a mistake for he and his players to even consider thoughts of a quadruple at this stage of the season.

Manchester City remain on course for an historic four-trophy haul following their 2-0 victory against Chelsea in The FA Cup Fifth Round, but the Chilean insists that the result is just one step on what promises to be a long and challenging journey.

"We never talk about that. I always say that we will try to fight as far as we can in all the competitions but I never talk about the quadruple," he said.

"It is a step in one competition, one step more.  Now we must continue in the Champions League, but for me the most important thing that we did today was to beat a great team."

Goals from Stevan Jovetic and Samir Nasri were enough to see off a lethargic Chelsea side. It was a result that also ended a two-game run of defeats against Jose Mourinho's side and went some way to avenging the 1-0 Premier League defeat a fortnight ago.

However, Pellegrini insisted the most important thing was that his side had rediscovered their winning ways – and nothing else.

"It was not revenge", he added. "Of course we did not want to lose two games against Chelsea at home but I think that today the team played well in every sense. It was very important for our team not to play against Sunderland on Wednesday.

"This team played 18 games in the last two months of December and January and I thought that the team was not fresh. That’s why we had a little downer in our performances against Chelsea and Norwich.

"Chelsea are a very good team with great players, so the way we won today was very important for the trust of the team. It’s important for continuing in the FA Cup because for our team it is a very important competition also."

Meanwhile, Pellegrini's opposite number Jose Mourinho had no complaints about the result, and admitted his team were outplayed by Manchester City on this occasion.

“Two weeks ago the best team won, and today – the best team won. For me it's that simple”

He said: "I don't think my team failed today. I say that City played much better than us, deserved much more than us to win. When the best team wins, I think football is in peace.

"Two weeks ago the best team won, and today – the best team won. So for me it's that simple – and to me gives more credit to my players because to win twice against City during the season, and to win here, today was proven that it is very very difficult to do it.

"So credit for what my team did two weeks ago – and today the situation was simple – they were the best team, they deserved to win.

"They won. Simple."
