Wigan Athletic captain Emmerson Boyce dedicated the Latics’ FA Cup Fifth Round win at Cardiff City to the club’s supporters.

A controlled finish from Chris McCann and a belter from Ben Watson either side of Fraizer Richardson’s strike for City sealed the memorable victory, setting up a re-run of last year’s Final in the Sixth Round as Wigan prepare to face Manchester City at Etihad Stadium.

The holders are enjoying some journey in The Cup and are now 11 games unbeaten – and the skipper could not have been more pleased following Saturday’s win.

“It is the beauty of The FA Cup that anyone can win it, and we showed that last year.”

Boyce said: “It was a great team performance. We knew before the game that we had a great chance coming here, we’ve been playing quite well of late, and as a player you want to show you can play against a Premier League team and we did that and got a great result.”

Watson’s goal stole the headlines as he thundered the ball home from around 35 yards out, and Boyce praised Wigan’s very own Cup hero.

“He’s got a great strike on him and his free-kick was excellent.

“Our FA Cup hero again and hopefully he can march us on to the Semi-Final, if not The Final. As the Wigan saying goes; ‘We believe’. Fingers crossed we can get there again.”

Around 1,500 of the club’s fans braved the windy conditions to witness another chapter in their FA Cup story, and Boyce dedicated the victory to the Latics faithful.

He added: “We get a lot of stick regarding our fans but they came out in their numbers.

“It was a long trip, and it’s been bad weather, but from the players, the result was for them. They travelled all the way down here and we would just like to thank them for their great support.”

The Barbados international still thinks of the moment he lifted the trophy at Wembley last May, and he is loving his FA Cup adventure at Wigan.

He added: “The FA Cup is a great experience and something you dream of as a boy. In the local park you pretend you are playing at Wembley, and to be able to actually go there and fulfil my dream last year was amazing.

“Hopefully we can go there and do it again, for me, for my family, people that know me and for the club as a whole, it is a magical feeling.

“It is the beauty of The FA Cup that anyone can win it, and we showed that last year. It will be quality if we do but we’ll take it each step as we go.”
