Newcastle Benfield ready for Spennymoor challenge

It's been nearly 15 years since a Newcastle-based side contested a Final at the home of football, but Newcastle Benfield boss Steve Bowey has dared his players to dream as they prepare to lock horns with FA Vase holders Spennymoor Town on Saturday.

The city of the River Tyne was last represented at Wembley in a showpiece event back in 1999, when Newcastle United were defeated by Manchester United in the The FA Cup Final.

Neighbouring towns in the north-east have fared a little bit in recent times - Whitley Bay, Dunston UTS and Spennymoor have all got their hands on The FA Vase in the past five years - and Bowey believes there is no good reason why his players can't bring a bit of silverware back to Newcastle this time around.

He told TheFA.com: "Everybody wants to play at Wembley and we're three games away from that. It's every boy's dream to play at Wembley. Spennymoor did it last year - why not Newcastle Benfield this year?"

If Bowey is to fulfill his childhood dream, he must first deal with one of the most difficult ties of the Fifth Round.

Fellow Northern Football League Division One side Spennymoor are unbeaten in 12 matches in all competitions since the end of November and have not tasted defeat on their own patch this season.

Bowey is aware of the task at hand but says his players are ready for the challenge that lies ahead.

He added: "It's a tough ask. Spennymoor are a team that have been together for a few years now and they're a very organised team that work hard and have got some excellent players. So to play them away from home is going to be especially hard.

"But it's a one-off game and we're going to treat it as if it was our cup final. We know Spennymoor inside-out, all about their players. We played them earlier this season and drew two-each at home.

"So we're going to go there full of confidence - we're unbeaten since the turn of the year - and we've got some excellent players. It's going to be an exciting tie."
