Mathieu Flamini dreaming of Cup glory with Arsenal

Mathieu Flamini wants another Cup run with Arsenal

Every Arsenal fan remembers where they were when Patrick Vieira stroked home the penalty to win the 2005 FA Cup - and Mathieu Flamini is no different.

Yet unlike any other member of the Arsenal squad that will face Tottenham on Saturday he was actually on the club's books at the time and had the perfect view in the Millennium Stadium almost nine years ago.

The memory is still strong for Flamini, and it is one he describes as "intense" and pleasurable.

Now, after returning to Arsenal from AC Milan in the summer, he has the chance to add new chapters to his love affair with the FA Cup.

And what better way to do so than by beating North London rivals Spurs in their Third Round tie at the Emirates.

It is a mouth-watering prospect and Flamini is fully aware of its significance as he knows just what winning the world's oldest cup competition means to all players.

  • Born: 7 March 1984
  • Place: Marseille, France
  • Previous clubs: Marseille (2003-04), Arsenal (2004-08), AC Milan (2008-2013), Arsenal (2013-)
  • Arsenal debut: 15 August 2004 (v Everton)
  • International debut: 7 February 2007 (v Argentina)

"Of course I remember Patrick Vieira scoring that penalty," said Flamini, who played four games during that FA Cup run but did not play in the Final.

"To win the FA Cup in 2005 was a real pleasure for me. It is such an intense and good memory.

"I can't believe it has been so long [since Arsenal last won a trophy]. Time is passing quickly and when you have so many games it is difficult to realise how lucky we are.

"It would be amazing to win the FA Cup. It would be the second one for me, which makes it an extra pleasure if I win it another time.

"When you are a top player you work hard every morning, and you do it for titles. Here we have the opportunity to win one and you have to give everything.

"When you are at Arsenal you have big ambitions and they are simple - you want to win every game, every trophy and we have to fight for that. The FA Cup means a lot to me."

Flamini returned to Arsenal's colours against Tottenham back in September, and there is no opponent he would rather face in the evening clash.

"That game was my first back with Arsenal and it was very emotional," he added. "It was a big comeback for me.

"It will be special to play them of course. It is a derby and that means we have to win it."
