England striker Jermain Defoe will end the season in the MLS, after it was announced by Tottenham Hotspur that he will be joining Toronto FC.
The 31-year-old has been linked with a move to the Canadian club in recent weeks as well as a number of Premier League and Championship clubs.
But he has agreed a four year contract with the club, who will pay Spurs a fee of around £8m for the player.
Now managed by Defoe’s former Spurs team-mate Ryan Nelsen, Toronto will welcome the former West Ham and Portsmouth player to the club from 28 February.
That means Defoe will remain at White Hart Lane until then and be part of Tim Sherwood’s squad with the opportunity to add to his 142 goals for the club over the next nine games.
"Everybody knows how much this club means to me and I will play my heart out for the team and the fans until my last kick for the club," said Defoe.
"I have had a fantastic time here and the fans have always been amazing to me.
"I am grateful for the opportunity for myself and my family to experience living overseas and for me to play in the MLS with a contract that will take me to the age of 35. I have no doubt I shall be coming back as a fan supporting the team in the years to come too."

Spurs head coach Sherwood added: "This is a great opportunity for Jermain and he feels it is one that he wishes to pursue.
"He has played a big part in the club for many years and we all know he will give his best until his last minute in a Spurs shirt."
Toronto look to be having an active month, with USA international Michael Bradley also on the verge of joining the club.
Aside from head coach Nelsen, another familiar face for Defoe will be club captain Steven Caldwell who played against Defoe during his days with Sunderland and Burnley.
Defoe has been a regular with England over the years, scoring 19 goals in his 55 appearances to date.
