Substitute Joe Garner fired home an astonishing half-hour hat-trick as Preston North End claimed a dramatic 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town in their FA Cup Third Round replay.

The striker came on after 62 minutes at Deepdale with Ipswich leading thanks to Frank Nouble's goal.

Garner took just six minutes to make his mark, scoring twice within 45 seconds, to turn a deficit into a 2-1 lead for the home side.

David McGoldrick then made it 2-2 with 15 minutes to go and it seemed like the tie was heading for extra-time.

But Garner was not finished there as he smashed home a left-footed effort with just two minutes remaining to finish a memorable night with the match-ball. The victory also secured a Fourth Round trip to Nottingham Forest.

And having already put out one Championship side, Simon Grayson will be confident of another upset – particularly as his side have lost just once away from home in three months.

But this was a night to remember, no matter how far they progress in the competition.

The two sides had drawn 1-1 in the first meeting at Portman Road, and a first-half of few chances had many wondering if extra-time would be needed to separate them.

But this tie exploded into life in the second-half, starting when Preston goalkeeper Declan Rudd attempted to keep the ball in play but only succeeded in gifting it to Nouble. He had the easy task of slotting it home to give Town the lead.

That merely served to sting Preston into life, though, particularly when top scorer Garner entered the fray.

His impact was almost immediate, the striker heading home a corner from Paul Gallagher to bring the scores level.

And just 45 seconds later it was 2-1, the forward smashing home a low shot that gave Scott Loach no chance.

It was frantic stuff, and soon the tie was level again as McGoldrick, another substitute, rose highest to meet Carlos Edwards' cross.

Once more it seemed extra-time would be needed, but Garner wasn't finished, and he had the final say turning sharply to found the corner of the net to wrap up a dramatic game.
