Paul Gallagher targets Cup recovery for Preston NE

Tuesday 14 Jan 2014
Paul Gallagher is currently on loan with Preston NE from Leicester City.

Paul Gallagher is aiming to help Preston North End provide a perfect reaction to their weekend defeat on Tuesday, when they play Ipswich Town in their FA Cup Third Round replay.

The on-loan Leicester City striker was part of the Lilywhites team which lost to fellow League One high-fliers Wolves on Saturday.

But with an opportunity to put their promotion chase to one side and test themselves against Championship opposition, Gallagher is looking forward to the Deepdale clash after their 1-1 draw at Portman Road nine days ago.

“We gave them a good game down there, so Ipswich know they are going to be in for a hard game,” said the former Scotland international.

“Under the lights at Deepdale, it should be a good game – we are two teams that try and play the game the right way.

“We know that Ipswich are a good team, they got beat at the weekend as well [against QPR in the Championship], and their manager Mick McCarthy will be wanting a reaction, the same as we do ourselves.”

Having come through the ranks with Preston’s Lancashire neighbours Blackburn Rovers before his move to Leicester City in 2009, Gallagher has played the majority of his career in the top two divisions.

So he knows what to expect from Ipswich, should Preston not approach the tie in the way set out by boss Simon Grayson.

And with another Championship club in Nottingham Forest awaiting the winners in the Fourth Round, the 29-year-old has sound advice for his team-mates.

“They are a quality team, there are no ifs or buts about that,” he told pnefc.com.

“If you give them time on the ball they will make things happen, so we know we will need to be straight into their faces.

“We know they will let us have the ball because they respect us and they know we have got good players, so it will be a good game of football I think.

“All we can do really is move on from Saturday to the next game and there is no better one than playing against a Championship team.

“We gave them a good game down there and managed to get a replay, so it will be a good game and we will try to get back to winning ways.”
