The Isuzu FA Vase

A busy day in The FA Vase Fourth Round for north-east clubs

Saturday 18 Jan 2014
The FA Carlsberg Vase Fourth Round Proper took place on Saturday.

St Andrews pulled off the upset of The FA Vase Fourth Round with victory over AFC Rushden and Diamonds, a team placed one division higher than them.

The East Midlands Counties Football League side battled in tough conditions at the Diamonds' Dog and Duck Stadium to win 2-0.

United Counties League Premier Division side Diamonds were outclassed by their opponents who booked their spot in the Fifth Round.

Elsewhere, Northern League Division One outfit Newcastle Benfield eased through to the next stage of the competition with a 3-1 home win over Congleton Town at Sam Smith's Park.

A late penalty from Tom James was just enough to help Wisbech Town record a narrow 2-1 away success at Northern League Division One side Ashington.

Before the match, Wisbech's co-manager Paul Cousins admitted that his team had been making the most of YouTube to analyse their opponents and it certainly worked.

There was also a 3-0 victory for Northern League Division One’s Morpeth Town over Westfields at Craik Park.

Meanwhile, Stephen Goddard's strike guided another north-east outfit, Dunston UTS, to a hard-fought 2-1 home win in extra time against Coleshill Town at the UTS Stadium.

West Auckland also needed extra-time to get past division two side Whickham in their tie.

Auckland had led for much of the game, courtesy of John Campbell's goal, but the hosts equalised with 15 minutes to go.

However, Mattie Moffat's clinical finish in extra time and a second goal from Campbell wrapped up a 3-1 win at the Glebe Sports Ground.

Dunston UTS celebrate their 2012 FA Carlsberg Vase Final victory over West Auckland Town.

Dunston UTS won The FA Vase at Wembley back in 2012.

A brace from Tyler Sibbick and a goal from Nat Auckland earned Western League Premier Division side Larkhall Athletic a 3-0 victory over Blackfield & Langley at the Plain Ham.

And Spartan South Midlands League table-toppers Ampthill Town continued their impressive form this season by recording a 3-1 success over Norwich United.

Groundstaff had to work overtime to make sure that Hallen's Fourth Round match against Alresford Town did not fall foul of the weather, and they were duly rewarded, as the Bristol club ran out 2-0 winners.

Cornwall no longer have any clubs left in The Vase, as Bodmin Town lost 3-1 away to Brightlingsea Regent - meaning the hosts reach the Fifth Round for the first time.

Bad weather forced the postponement of three matches: Hanworth Villa v Eastbourne United, Hanwell Town v Ashford United, East Preston v Brantham Athletic and Sholing v Hullbridge Sports.

The draw for the Fifth Round will be made at Wembley on Monday morning.
