Reds' England duo rescue point for Liverpool at Anfield

Steven Gerrard is congratulated on his goal by team-mate Raheem Sterling.

England captain Steven Gerrard netted a crucial equaliser from the penalty spot to help Liverpool come back from two goals down and earn a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa.

Gerrard made no mistake from 12-yards after Brad Guzan had brought down Luis Suarez inside the penalty area.

It was a superb comeback from the Merseyside club and they also had England striker Daniel Sturridge to thank for helping them get back into the game.

Liverpool

Sturridge scores Liverpool's first against Aston Villa.

Sturridge was making his first start for the club following an ankle injury and he made an immediate impact, getting on the score sheet on the stroke of half time when he fired the ball into the roof of the net.

Elsewhere, another England striker was on the mark as Jay Rodriguez scored an early goal to put Southampton 1-0 up at Sunderland, but they were eventually held to a 2-2 draw with winger Adam Johnson equalising for the hosts.

There was further good news for England Manager Roy Hodgson, as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain appeared as a late substitute for Arsenal as they maintained their position at the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 home win over Fulham.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been sidelined since the opening day of the season after he picked up a knee injury, but he has made a successful return to training and will now be hoping to regain his best form in the second half of the season.

Hodgson himself was at the Boleyn to see Newcastle United come away with a 3-1 win over West Ham.

The Three Lions boss would have been pleased to see Andy Carroll make another appearance following his long-term foot injury which has seen him miss the first half of the season.

Southampton

Southampton's Jay Rodriguez celebrates another goal, this time at Sunderland.

Despite West Ham’s position in the table, manager Sam Allardyce insists he will not rush the England striker back into action and says they will take their time to ensure he remains fit for the rest of the season.

Allardyce said: "Irrespective of how desperate it gets, we have to make sure Andy Carroll stays fit for the rest of the season.”

And Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has no doubts that Carroll will score the goals to keep West Ham in the Premier League this season.

Pardew said: “He is going to be important for the second part of the season. He is a terrific character and I am sure he will keep this team in the division.”

England 'keeper Joe Hart played his part in helping Manchester City record a 4-2 win over Cardiff, whilst his Under-21 counterpart Jack Butland was in impressive form for Stoke City at Selhurst Park but couldn't prevent a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace for Mark Hughes' team.
