And he's since been linked with a number of foreign clubs with Italian sides Roma and AC Milan and Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona among those said to have taken an interest in the former Arsenal star.

"The situation is that we are talking to several clubs," explained Cole's agent, Jonathan Barnett.

"At the moment it is only clubs based abroad - there may be other developments, but for the moment, that is all we are talking."

Cole collected 107 caps for England before announcing his retirement from international football at the end of last season after missing out on Roy Hodgson's squad for the World Cup in Brazil.

He won the Premier League, four FA Cups, the Champions League and the Europa League during his time at Stamford Bridge after moving there from boyhood club Arsenal in 2006.
