England U19s captain Calum Chambers helped get the Ronald Koeman era off to a winning start on their pre-season trip to the Netherlands.
The Saints were taking on Dutch lower-leaguers EHC Hoensbroek as part of a two-game tour, and Chambers lined up alongside a number of other internationals from the development squads as they romped to a 4-0 victory.
And Chambers – who captained the Young Lions throughout the 2013-14 season – managed to get himself on the scoresheet by netting the second of the four goals.
Chambers was one of six teenagers in the Saints’ starting 11 – and nodded home from Sam McQueen’s inswinging corner to double the lead and add to his provider’s opener.
As well as McQueen and Chambers, also on the scoresheet at the SportPark de Dem were Billy Sharp and Steven Davis.
Chambers was joined by fellow 2013-14 U19s internationals Harrison Reed, Matt Targett, Sam Gallagher and Jordan Turnbull in the opening pre-season game, while James Ward-Prowse, Nathaniel Clyne, Jack Cork – who have all represented England at Under-21 level – also took part in the early season run out.
Southampton will play the second game of their trip against KSK Hasselt on 17 July, before travelling back to the UK for further preparation games against Swindon Town, AFC Bournemouth, Brighton & Hove Albion and finally Bayer Leverkusen.
Koeman's men get their league campaign under way against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday 16 August.
