England received a special good luck message from ex Smiths’ frontman Morrissey ahead of their World Cup opener against Italy.

The 55-year-old singer stayed in the same hotel as the Three Lions during their World Cup warm-up games against Ecuador and Honduras in Miami last week.

England left-back Leighton Baines chatted with the iconic lyricist and revealed Morrissey’s special message to the players.

Baines said: “I knew he had played in Miami that week so I had a chat with him and he wished us good luck.

“I was a bit nervous about speaking to him because I didn’t know how it would be received.

“I don’t know if he knew who I was. I don’t think anyone else other than Gary Neville knew who he was.”
