Pre-season has started earlier for a number of footballers this summer, with Michael Johnson Performance hosting a special training camp at St. George’s Park.

The likes of Bolton Wanderers striker Marvin Sordell and Ipswich Town duo Tyrone Mings and Frank Nouble were among the players trying to get a head-start for the new campaign, with MJP providing training in the "raw ingredients of athleticism".

MJP was founded eight years ago by the USA's multiple Olympic gold medalist sprinter in his homeland and has since opened centres in the Caribbean, China and at the national football centre.

And whilst MJP caters for elite level athletes in a number of different sports, the last three weeks have been purely football with the volunteers hard at work in Burton.

"Here in the UK, football is a big part of what we do, not just with the athletes individually but with teams as well," revealed Johnson.

"We've been running our football pre-season preparation camp all through the month of June.

"All of these athletes are here working to improve their performance for the upcoming season to prepare themselves for their best performance.

"It's extremely important because they're not going to get the chance to do this sort of work once the season starts."

With a number of revolutionary methods used during the training sessions, the work-out is not specifically tailored to football.

But the balls were invariably introduced at stages as the players involved broke off from the intense physical element of the work.

"Even though the ball is out, that's just to make it applicable to football and we're still working on the raw ingredients of athleticism," he explained.

"So it may range from speed, strength and power to minimising the risk of injury and being concerned about the long season ahead and wanting the stamina to be able to compete at a high level for the entire season.

"That's what we're doing because that's what Michael Johnson Performance does.

"We don't get into football technique, as that is not our expertise, so in any sport that we work in, it is about speed development, strength development, stamina which is all relevant at the elite level.

"Football is obviously a major sport in this country and it highlights our work and what we're able to do with athletes and our work here with footballers."
