Roy Hodgson to look at left-back options against Denmark

Roy Hodgson has hinted he will use Wednesday night's game against Denmark to look at his left-back options ahead of the World Cup.

England take on Denmark at Wembley in the last game before Hodgson must submit his 30-man long squad to FIFA, which will then be narrowed down to 23 before flying to Brazil.

And with three left-backs in his squad this week - Leighton Baines, Ashley Cole and Luke Shaw - Hodgson revealed that he'll only be using two, with the Everton man expected to rest.

It will then give the England Manager chance to run the rule over Cole, who hasn't featured for Chelsea since January, and 18-year-old Shaw, a first-time call-up from Southampton.

"I've spoken to Leighton and he won't feature tomorrow, unless we get an incredible number of injuries," said Hodgson.

"All three of them want to play, but even with substitutions I can't fit in three left-backs.

"It's the right moment in this game to look at one of or both Luke and Ashley Cole, as Leighton has been playing regularly for us.

"The two I need to look at more in an England shirt are Ashley and Luke."

England's last two games at Wembley ended in defeat to Chile and Germany, both friendly matches that followed their successful World Cup qualifying campaign.

While Hodgson wants to see a number of players who could potentially make his squad for Brazil, he's also keen to kick-off the year with a win.

"We will be looking at different players," he said. "It's been two very good days training and I've been impressed by the attitude and the vigour the players have shown, but with 29 players there will be an awful lot who don't feature in the game.

"We know about Leighton but there will be more than that as I can only use 17."

He added: "We don't ever want to lose games and in those last two games we didn't set out to put our best teams on the field.

"This is our last game before the World Cup and I believe we'll be good enough and have a strong enough team for it not to happen.

"But I still can't elavate it to the importance of the World Cup.

"Denmark are a good team and I have great respect for them, but we're focusing on winning the game."
