Jermain Defoe scored twice on his Major League Soccer debut as Toronto FC won 2-1 at the Seattle Sounders.

The England striker took only 17 minutes to open his account, latching on to Jonathan Osorio's through ball before finishing low past Stefan Frei.

Seven minutes later he had another as he latched on to an errant pass from the Sounders' Marco Pappa to bag his second.

“To score two goals in your debut, it’s a dream.”

Clint Dempsey pulled one back for the hosts midway through the second half but it was not enough to stop Defoe from enjoying a dream start to life in the MLS.

“To score two goals in your debut, it’s a dream,” Defoe told reporters after the game. “To come here and to win was massive for us. Everyone’s delighted – it was an important three points.”

Toronto head coach Ryan Nelsen said Defoe’s performance was just what he had in mind when he signed the striker from Spurs.

He told the club website: “That was Jermain Defoe. Let’s just say I’m not surprised. When the ball falls in those situations, he puts them away. That’s why we brought him in. I was hoping he’d get in those scenarios and he got in them.”
