Steven Gerrard celebrates scoring his third penalty

Steven Gerrard scored twice as his Liverpool side defeated Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

The England and Reds skipper gave his side the lead on 34 minutes as he converted the first of three penalties he would have to take during the match.

It was penalty number two for Gerrard just seconds into the second-half as Phil Jones was penalised for a foul on Joe Allen – and he made no mistake as he doubled Liverpool’s lead.

Gerrard could have capped a dream afternoon off by sealing his hat-trick with 15 minutes to go. Nemanja Vidic saw red after picking up his second booking for a foul on Daniel Sturridge inside the area and upped stepped the midfielder – however the third time was not a charm as he struck his effort against the post.

Liverpool did grab a third though as Sturridge turned provider for strike-partner Luis Suarez. His mishit shot fell perfectly for the Uruguayan to fire past David de Gea on 84 minutes.

Fellow England internationals Glen Johnson, Raheem Sterling, Jordan Henderson and Under-21 defender Jon Flanagan all started for Liverpool.

Jones, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney were in the United team, with Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley joining them from the bench on 74 minutes.

In Sunday's later kick-off, the action started in explosive fashion as Arsenal gained the bragging rights in the North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.

Three Lions midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had a hand in the build-up as Tomas Rosicky hammered the Gunners ahead after only 72 seconds.

Spurs rallied and fought back, but despite the best efforts of fellow England international Andros Townsend in their midfield, they were unable to find a way past Kieran Gibbs and the visitors defence.
