England duo Jay Rodriguez and Adam Lallana scored superb goals for Southampton at White Hart Lane – but it was not enough as Tottenham came roaring back to win a stunning match 3-2.
Rodriguez opened the scoring for the visitors, controlling a long ball from goalkeeper Artur Boruc before curling an excellent finish around Hugo Lloris and into the far corner.
And Lallana made it two, clipping home after fellow England man Rickie Lambert had delayed his pass before putting the midfielder clean through on goal.
With Luke Shaw excelling at left-back Southampton were on top but Spurs showed real character to fight their way back into the match – and they were victorious thanks to two goals from Christian Eriksen and a last-gasp strike by Gylfi Sigurdsson.
In Sunday's late game, England striker Peter Crouch got on the scoresheet as Stoke came from behind to record an impressive 4-1 win at Aston Villa.
Christian Benteke had given Villa a fifth-minute lead with a superb goal but Peter Odemwingie restored parity in the 22nd minute after Crouch's knock-on. Then the former Liverpool striker went from provider to scorer three minutes later.
Steven Nzonzi made it 3-1 just before half time and Geoff Cameron added gloss to the scoreline in stoppage time with Stoke's fourth.
