The Newcastle United striker, who has come off the bench four times for the Magpies in the Premier League in recent weeks, is currently top scorer in the whole competition with seven goals in qualifying and another in the 3-0 tournament opening victory over Malta.
And the Geordie striker says the burning desire to leave with the golden boot is driving him to shoot England to glory over the next two weeks.
“It’s great to score a lot of goals for England and it’s a pleasure to do it in the European finals,” Armstrong told TheFA.com.
“It is always great to score goals. I really want to finish as top scorer."
Adam Armstrong
“I want to keep scoring, and as a striker, I want to get that top goalscorer award.
“It is always great to score goals. I really want to finish as top scorer at the tournament, and I need to keep scoring and the team winning if I am to achieve that.”
After helping his side defeat the host nation 3-0 in their opening group match on Friday, Armstrong and his team-mates know that victory against Turkey on Monday will secure them a place in the semi-finals.
The sides met in August at Burton Albion as Armstrong’s goal secured a 1-0 victory for the Young Lions, and the forward says it would “mean the world” to him to repeat that feat and fire his side into the next round.
“It would mean everything,” he said. “The last game was a real battle, and they are a strong and physical side. We will need to be at the top of our game, but we have the talent within our squad to beat anybody – and that’s exactly what we want to do.
“This is what we have been playing for all year and in the qualifiers. We needed to get here, and now we are we need to go out and do our job, work hard and see teams off.
“That started against Malta and now we need to do it against Turkey, and we’ll be giving it everything knowing that a place in the semi-finals awaits us if we do the business.”
"I’ve looked up to Wayne Rooney all my career. I love the way he plays and the goals he scores."
Adam Armstrong
With the stakes so high, many would be feeling the pressure, but Armstrong insists it is driving him and the squad forward.
“It was a big crowd on Friday but the lads loved it. All the fans there, getting behind Malta, it was really good. They all speak English, so we could hear all the songs, and it spurred us on and we gave a good performance.”
And he is now looking to emulate his hero Wayne Rooney, who appeared for the Three Lions in the exact same tournament in 2002.
“I’ve looked up to Wayne Rooney all my career. I love the way he plays and the goals he scores – I want to do that myself.
“Obviously he shone in this same tournament when he way with the under-17s, and I want to do the same.”
