Duggan celebrates her goal

Manchester City claimed their first victory in the FA Women’s Super League 1 with a 1-0 win over Arsenal thanks to a goal from striker Toni Duggan.

Duggan found herself in the right place at the right time and poked home Krystal Johnson’s cross at the near post on 11 minutes and that was enough to seal the victory but the striker was disappointed not to score more.

"I was delighted with my goal but I missed two sitters as well and I'm really hard on myself so I'll have to go back and work on that in training,” she said.

"We worked really hard for that win today. It was hot but we're conditioned well and I like playing in it. It's a summer league and the same for both sides.

Arsenal Ladies 0-1 Man City Ladies

Birmingham City Ladies 2-1 Chelsea Ladies

Everton Ladies 1-1 Bristol Academy

Notts County 0-0 Liverpool Ladies

Second placed Liverpool were unable to overhaul leaders Notts County as the top-two played out a goalless draw – a result that Reds manager Matt Beard felt was fair.

“Both teams showed a lot of heart and desire.  We knew what to expect from Notts and how they would press us.

“Notts County are a good team and with the injury problems we have, we probably would have taken a point.”

Elsewhere in WSL 1 Birmingham City claimed a 2-1 win over Chelsea thanks to goals from Josanne Potter and Chelsea Weston.

Nikita Parris fired Everton in front against Bristol Academy and it looked like it might be their day when Laura del Rio missed a penalty but Nikki Watts fired home to secure a point for her side.

In the FA Women’s Super League 2 Doncaster Rovers Belles maintained their 100% league record when they beat Watford Ladies 2-0.

The hosts took the lead after 18 minutes as Millie Bright curled a free-kick that a helpless Lauren Davey could only parry into her own net.

Sunderland Ladies 1-0 London Bees Ladies

Doncaster Rovers Belles 2-0 Watford Ladies

Millwall Ladies 2-0 Oxford United Ladies

Reading Ladies 4-0 Durham Ladies FC

Ten minutes later and the Belles doubled their advantage when Rhiannon Roberts met a Sue Smith cross at the far post and headed home.

And Doncaster boss Gordon Staniforth admitted he was shocked by his side’s stellar start to the season.

“I couldn’t have imagined this run at the start of the season,” he said.

“We strive for perfection which means winning every game but I didn’t expect this at this stage.

“We have players playing in the correct positions and we have a settled team. With a few adjustments we’ve got to where we are.”

Sunderland made sure they kept pace with Doncaster when they kept their perfect record intact with a 1-0 win over London Bees thanks to Beth Mead’s first-half header.
In the other matches a Francesca Kirby hat-trick gave Reading a comfortable 4-0 win over Durham and Millwall inflicted Oxford United’s fourth league defeat out of four with a 2-0 victory.

While on Saturday Yeovil and Aston Villa had to settle for a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
