Leighton Baines believes there is no room for complacency as the Three Lions build-up their preparations for Brazil

Leighton Baines says England are leaving "no stone unturned" as they prepare for unfamiliar conditions at the World Cup.

The Three Lions are training in Portugal this week and Roy Hodgson and his back-room team are taking special measures to get the players ready for the humidity of Brazil.

England kick-off their Finals campaign against Italy in the Amazonian capital of Manaus on 14 June, so the players have been training in multiple layers of training kit, including tracksuit trousers and rain jackets, to increase body temperature.

"I think the idea behind it is to get comfortable with that uncomfortable feeling of getting hot," said Baines.

"When you train with your club you sometimes put an extra layer on and by the time you have finished the warm-up you will maybe take it off. The idea now is to keep it on and you do get used to it.

"Each day we have been leaving it on a bit longer, but generally most of us have left it on for the full session to try and get used to it."

As well as extra clothing, Hodgson has welcomed sports scientists from Loughborough University into the camp to tests the players' sweat levels. They can then adapt recovery routines and fluid intake to suit players individually.

Baines said: "Today I had a patch on my arm, chest and leg and I am not sure about the science behind it but it absorbs a certain amount of sweat which they will then test and gauge.

"Some players will sweat more than others and so they will have to take in more fluids.

"I think it is a case of leaving no stone unturned really and tailoring everything.

"It is about ticking all the boxes and put us in the best place we can be so we are prepared for everything."

Everton defender Baines looks set to be Hodgson's first choice left-back after 107-capper Ashley Cole was left out of the squad.

But, with 18-year-old Southampton man Luke Shaw also vying for the starting berth against the Azzurri, Baines knows that there is no room for complacency.

"Before there was always the issue of three us of being considered and three doesn’t go into two," he said.

"The fact that he has chosen me and Luke is a great vote of confidence because you know what Ash brings to the table.

"He is phenomenal and has had a great club and international career. It is a great vote of confidence for the both of us."

He added: "You have to keep on your toes and not get complacent because if you don’t do the right things then you are not going to be playing.

"Things can change very quickly so I think whoever starts the first game in the tournament has to do the job otherwise they are not going to stay in the team."

England return to St. George's Park next week to prepare for their South America send-off against Peru at Wembley Stadium. Tickets are still available for the game, click here to buy online.
