England captain Steven Gerrard believes the excitement of playing the World Cup in Brazil is giving the whole squad extra motivation.

The Liverpool midfielder has plenty of experience of playing for his country at big tournaments, but he told the media on Thursday afternoon that the build-up to this competition is slightly different and that the young players are giving everyone plenty to think about.

With England facing Peru on Friday, followed by games against Ecuador and Honduras in Miami next week ahead of the Finals, Gerrard says he feels excited by the prospect of leading his talented squad against the best teams in the world.

Gerrard said: “The preparation is slightly different. People keep using the word relaxed but for me that is the wrong word.

“The squad is very focused at the moment and we cannot wait for 14 June to come around so we can put it into action.”

He continued: “I am very proud to sit here as captain and I am looking forward to the team doing well. There is no bigger stage than the World Cup and the reason why training has gone so well is that everyone is so excited how big this stage is.”

And Gerrard added that the competition for places is bringing out the best in everyone – and they must use the three upcoming games to show Manager Roy Hodgson what they can do.

"Everyone has impressed,” he said. “The young lads have done fantastically well and we have two great players fighting for every position in the starting eleven.

“The exciting thing for me is that everyone is capable of being picked in the starting eleven and that keeps the standard high as well. There are three opportunities to stake a claim.”
