Ormerod on FA Trophy mission at FC United of Manchester

Ormerod in action for Accrington Stanley during the summer of 2014
Three years ago Brett Ormerod was turning out in the Premier League for Blackpool. And eight years before that he was collecting an FA Cup runners-up medal after his Southampton side were defeated 1-0 by Arsenal in The Final.

Now the 37-year-old is plying his trade for Padiham in the Northern Premier League Division One North, the eighth tier of English football.

But while some may question Ormerod's desire to play so far down the football pyramid after making 99 Premier League appearances, the striker simply argues that the enjoyment is just the same.

"It's not a bad standard," he said. "I am with a great set of lads at Padiham and I am really enjoying it.

"To be honest it is a competitive league and it keeps me going. It gives me that buzz on a Saturday and I am still enjoying playing football."

Last summer was a contentious time for Ormerod. After his contract expired with Wrexham, the workmanlike forward was debating whether or not to hang up his boots, despite there being offers on the table.

The opportunity to join Accrington Stanley in particular caught Ormerod's eye, presenting him with the chance to return to the club he played for back in 1995 and link up with his ex Blackburn Rovers and Southampton team-mate, and then Accrington manager, James Beattie.

"I turned down Accrington Stanley in the summer," he revealed. "I was close to doing a deal there with James Beattie, who I obviously played with, and it would have been great to do a year there.

"However then he left and it fell through. I was left scratching my head as to whether or not I should hang up my boots.

"But I still wanted to keep playing while I can, as I still enjoy it, and I got a chance with Padiham."

Since joining the Storks, Ormerod has made a bright start, hitting a hat-trick in their 4-2 FA Trophy replay victory against Brigg Town earlier this month.

On Sunday, Padiham come up against FC United of Manchester in the First Qualifying Round and although he may have played in some big games before, Ormerod is not underestimating how important a tie the match is.

"FC United is a massive game for us. It's a big tie and we are looking forward to it," he told TheFA.com.

"We are bottom of the league at the moment, but we've won our last couple of games and I am really enjoying it. Hopefully we can get a good result on Sunday."
