FA Cup run can spur Maidstone United to Trophy glory

Maidstone believe they can go all the way in The FA Trophy
On the back of their FA Cup exploits, club secretary Ian Tucker believes Maidstone United are one of the favourites to go all the way in this year’s FA Trophy.

A draw with Stevenage earned them a First Round Replay last weekend for the first time in a quarter-of-a-century.

And the club from Kent, who recently had Manchester United and England defender Chris Smalling come through the club's youth system, are hoping that and the pain of a last-minute defeat to Halifax in the Trophy Second Round in 2012 will spur them on this year.

"It's a great competition for the non-League clubs to be involved in and the opportunity of a day out at Wembley is great for everyone at the club," said Tucker.

"We've had some good results in both the league and Cup this year, and beating teams such as Welling in the FA Cup has given us confidence to go as far as possible."

Their Cup draw at League Two Stevenage earned them a replay at their own Gallagher Stadium, which was the first English ground with a 3G artificial pitch.

This year, The FA removed the 20-year ban on playing cup matches on artificial surfaces so United will be allowed to play on home soil.

"The ban never really affected us because this is the first time we've reached the FA Cup First Round for over 20 years," Tucker added.

"Nevertheless, it is great we can play the replay at home and get the crowd behind us.

"Obviously the Cup competitions are brilliant but the owner and the manager know that the league is our main aim.

"We have a great set-up and crowd here and are in place for promotion back towards Conference football."

United are challenging near the top of the Isthmian Premier Division, while Trophy opponents AFC Sudbury are a league below in the Division One North currently battling for a Play-off spot.

The semi-professional club from Suffolk have had relative success in FA competitions over the years.

They reached the FA Cup Second Round in 1996 and the First Round more recently in 2000 when they were crushed 6-1 by Darlington.

The Suds have also made the FA Trophy first round proper on three occasions in 2006, 2008 and 2010.

Maidstone and Sudbury kick-off at 3pm on Saturday 15 November at The Gallagher Stadium. Click here for ticket and travel information.
