Luke Shaw is excited to be back in the England senior set-up after helping the Under-21s seal qualification to the European Championship.

Having been a part of the Three Lions squad at the World Cup in June, Shaw joined Manchester United but picked up a pre-season injury that kept him sidelined until mid-September.

It meant he was also unavailable for England but on his return to action was called into the Under-21s vital play-off double-header against Croatia last month.

And after Gareth Southgate's side completed their mission, the 19-year-old is now looking to add to his three caps at senior level as they prepare to take on Scotland in Glasgow on Tuesday.

Shaw told TheFA.com: "It’s really good to be back, it’s something I wanted to do - to be around the seniors.

"It’s always disappointing to get an injury, especially at that time. It was hard to take as I hate being injured, I just want to play football.

"But now being back fit, I’ve had a few games now and I’m feeling fit and strong. Being picked for the Under-21s gave me the incentive to get back in [the seniors].

"I knew they were two very important games [against Croatia] last month and it was important to get the wins needed.

"Some people say that, because I’ve been to the World Cup, I might not learn anything from the games, but they were games we had to win.

"It was a good learning curve going over to Croatia, to feel what the atmosphere was like over there. It was a tough game but a great victory for us."

Despite being the youngest member of Southgate's squad last month, Shaw has collected more senior caps than any of the other players.

He added: "I’ve been away with the Under-21s a few times and I know a lot of the lads. It’s like a family - everyone is really friendly.

"I feel like one of the oldest when I go away. Stepping into the seniors and having been at a World Cup, you feel older than you actually are.

"But I was the youngest so it was important that I went there and proved to people why I was in the seniors."

As England fly north to Glasgow, Shaw will be joined by another of the Under-21s stars.

West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino has netted nine times in 10 games for the Young Lions, which, added to his eight goals for the Baggies this season, has earned him a call from Hodgson.

And Shaw believes he is not the only England youngster knocking on the door.

"He’s an unbelievable talent. I’ve been able to play with him a few times now and it’s frightening the ability he has," said the former Southampton left-back.

"We’ve even seen it with the start of the season he’s had, which is something very special. He’s the leading English goalscorer in the Premier League and that could build his confidence and keep pushing him on.

"To be involved with the senior team is a very proud moment for him and he realises how important it is."

Shaw added: "But there is a lot of English talent. I’ve been lucky enough to come up through the ages and see what special talent there is.

"There are a lot of players around the Under-21s who could make that step up."
