Wayne Rooney: Our quality shone through in the end

Wayne Rooney says England’s victory in Scotland was down to hard work and quality, as they stretched their perfect start to the season.

The captain led by example, grabbing two second-half goals to silence the home support and make it six consecutive wins for the Three Lions.

And Rooney believes his team-mates rose to the challenge on what could have been a difficult night in Glasgow.

“It was a good game, a great atmosphere and we played really well,” Rooney told TheFA.com after the match.

“You could see how much this game meant to us, it was a very good performance and we deserved the victory.

“We were ready for it, we knew what is was going to be like and it was exactly what we expected.

“We went out there and tried to quiet them a little bit and got our goals at really good times. Once we went 2-0 up it quietened their crowd.”

He continued: “We all worked really hard, we knew we had to work hard to get the victory and we knew that if we could out-work them then the quality would show through. That’s exactly what happened.”

Rooney extended his England goal tally to 46, and he now sits three behind the long-standing record held by Sir Bobby Charlton.

His first, a well-placed header just after the break, put his team two goals to the good after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had given them a first-half advantage.

“I was in the box for the free-kick. It came out to Jack Wilshere who shot and it came off the Scotland defender,” recalled the skipper.

“I just tried to generate as much power as I could to take it past the keeper and into the corner. I’m really pleased with it.”

Andy Robertson pulled a goal back for Scotland to give them a lifeline with seven minutes to go, but Rooney responded almost instantly after a neat passing move between James Milner and Adam Lallana.

“It was a great goal, there was close to 20 passes. A well-worked goal down the right-hand side, Adam Lallana’s got to the byline and I managed to time my run perfectly. He’s given a great cutback to me, I had an open goal.

“We scored some good goals, played well, worked hard and deserved the victory.”

Rooney also praised the travelling England fans who were in the minority inside Celtic Park, but played their part in a special night.

And he hopes the Three Lions can maintain that winning feeling.

“There were 5,000 England fans there tonight and I think our fans knew it would be hard to be heard with the Scotland fans outnumbering them. 

"But we could hear them on the pitch – they were fantastic and I’m sure they’ve had a great night tonight.

“We’re working hard and we’re enjoying it. We’re enjoying winning. I said after the Slovenia game we’ve got a great winning mentality and hopefully that will continue.”
