The north London side had five senior Three Lions internationals in their line-up as they dominated the first half over Louis van Gaal’s Red Devils – who included four of Roy Hodgson’s men.
Gunners forward Danny Welbeck looked to be the most likely to get himself on the scoresheet as he headed over and then fired straight at David de Gea as the home side started strongly – and fellow Arsenal and England man Jack Wilshere really should have opened the scoring on the 15-minute mark after shooting straight at the keeper when clean through.
United and Three Lions full back Luke Shaw was then forced out of the action moments later with a knock, as another England international, Ashley Young, entered the fray in his place.
The second period started in the same fashion as the first with the hosts on the attack, Welbeck again denied by De Gea shortly after the restart before Wilshere went down clutching his left ankle.
Danny Ings scored twice for Burnley
After receiving treatment, Wilshere was able to continue as he team-mates continued to press for an opener – but it was a short-lived return to the action as he hobbled off to be replaced by Santi Cazorla just moments later.
Within a minute things got worse for Arsene Wenger’s men as they fell behind. Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny clashed with his defender Kieran Gibbs as he punched away a cross. But the ball fell to Antonio Valencia on the right-hand side of the box, and the United winger drilled a strike across goal that struck the scrambling Gibbs as he diverted it inside the far post.
The left back, who featured during the Scotland win, was credited with the 56th-minute own goal.
Arsenal pressed for an equaliser, but it would be United skipper Rooney who would next have the ball in the net. Tuesday night’s two-goal hero delightfully chipped sub goalie Emiliano Martinez following a breakaway with five minutes to go, and although Olivier Giroud pulled one back in added time, it was Rooney’s goal that secured the points and a 2-1 away win.
Calum Chambers played the full game for Arsenal as two other England internationals, Chris Smalling and Michael Carrick, celebrated victory for United along while Tyler Blackett (U21) and James Wilson (U20) also celebrated victory for United.
England Under-21 striker Danny Ings was the hero for Burnley as he scored two goals to help his side record a 2-1 win over Stoke to record their first away win of the season.
Ings scored twice in two minutes early in the first half and even though Jon Walters pulled a goal back for Stoke, Burnley held on to move off the bottom of the Premier League table.
Senior England international defender Gary Cahill played his part once again as Chelsea extended their lead at the top of the table to seven points and maintained their unbeaten start to the season.
Cahill has been one of the star performers for the Blues and he ensured his side kept another clean sheet as they came away with a 2-0 home win over West Brom – who had another member of Roy Hodgson’s squad, Saido Berahino, among their ranks.
Butland helped Derby stay top of the Championship
England keeper Joe Hart was on the winning side as Manchester City came from a goal down to beat Swansea 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.
Midfielder James Milner appeared as a second-half substitute to help City stay third in the table.
Jonjo Shelvey was impressive for Swansea City and almost scored an equaliser in added time when his free-kick almost looped into the back of the net.
Two other senior squad members, Phil Jagielka and Ross Barkley, played their part in helping Everton move up to eighth in the table as they overcame West Ham 2-1 at Goodison Park. England U18 captain, Ryan Ledson, was an unused sub for the Toffees as he continues his wait for his first-team debut.
Andy Carroll, who has nine caps for his country, started his first game of the season for the Hammers following a long-term ankle injury but was unable to get on the scoresheet.
In the Championship, Patrick Bamford scored for Middlesbrough as they drew away to Wigan Athletic. The forward notched a second-half equaliser to ensure his side, which included fellow Under-21 man Ben Gibson, a point at The DW Stadium.
Another of Gareth Southgate’s squad in action this afternoon was captain Jack Butland. The goalkeeper, along with midfielder Will Hughes, helped Derby County remain at the top of the Championship table after a 2-1 win at Watford. Their international team-mate Jonathan Bond was between the sticks for the Hornets.

Jake Forster-Caskey was involved for Brighton as they drew 3-3 at Norwich City, and Jamaal Lascelles played the full 90 minutes as Nottingham Forest triumphed 3-0 at Wolves.
U18 international Lewis Cook was part of the Leeds side that were defeated 2-1 at Blackburn Rovers, and back in the Premier League his fellow Young Lion Adam Armstrong (U18) was a late substitute for Newcastle, who won 1-0 at home to QPR.
Moving down to League One, and U19 international Dele Alli assisted MK Dons as they sealed a 1-0 win at home to Port Vale and Matt Grimes (U20) was a part of the Exeter City side that won 3-2 at home to Shrewsbury Town.
