The 21-year-old has just finished a successful loan spell with Derby County, where former Manchester United coach Steele worked alongside him.
And as Butland returns to Stoke City to challenge Asmir Begovic for the No1 spot at the Britannia Stadium, he has left a firm impression on Steele.
"He gave us great stability and we knew what we were getting,” revealed Steele, who coached a string of top goalkeepers during his five years under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.
"He is confident and he is going to be a great goalkeeper, you can see that, he has got everything going for him in terms of his build and stature.
"He has a calmness about him, which I like to see.
"Your goalkeeper should be the calmest man on the field and from the first day he came in, he has had that persona and has given everyone an aura of confidence and calm."
Despite his age, Butland has already represented five clubs after starting his career with Birmingham City before moving onto Stoke.
Loan spells with Barnsley, Leeds United and Derby have followed, which have all added to his international caps with England at U16s, U17s, U20s, Under-21s and senior level.
And Steele felt that experience helped Butland make such a valuable contribution whilst covering for their injured goalkeeper Lee Grant.
"He has had to get used to the way we play and he has got better and better at that," added Steele.
"He was very well received by the boys, he fitted in really well and that is two-way.
"We are thankful to Stoke and to Mark Hughes for letting him come here and he has left here saying that ours will be the first result that he will look out for from now on."
